Recent reads

I was completely underwhelmed with Bossypants by Tina Fey.
Completely.
A few funny lines here and there but I just quit about half way.

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern is the hot ticket around here.
Very engaging, well written. But I don't know if I'm as sold as I wanted to be.
I'm still trying to figure out the logistics of the ending - which is probably the problem.
Fascinating concept, fascinating imagination going on. Very well written.
My imagination pales in comparison (unless I'm having a dream - then things get wacky).
But a great read.

A Stolen Life by Jaycee Dugard was another great, quick read.
Jaycee was the gal who was kidnapped and held for EIGHTEEN YEARS.
It's not the best written book I've ever read but what an incredible story.
Brad said, "Why would anyone want to read about something so depressing?" - and I thought about it and 1) you may as well never read because a lot of great stories have very depressing parts. To say nothing of history. ("Night" by Elie Wiesel keeps coming to mind.) 2) I think there are things to learn from other people's hardships. And I am completely amazed at Jaycee's attitude. She has forgiven her abductors. She doesn't hate them. She says, "I don't believe in hate. To me it wastes too much time. People who hate waste so much of their life hating that they miss out on all the other stuff out there. I do not choose to life my life that way."
Really incredible. Perfect example of how abductors completely brainwash their victims.
Google her name and her living conditions and it'll be even more amazing.

I've started another good book so I'll keep you posted.
Happy reading!

I am reading Night Circus right now. Really like it, but I feel the same way. We will see how I feel when I finish it!

A Stolen Life was a great read for me. I didn't expect to like it. My husband asked me the same question.

I had the same reaction to Bossypants. I really wanted to like it and there were some laugh-outloud stories and lines, but overall it was just not that great. I love all your reviews and recommendations!!
